Ombudsperson for Gender Equality Višnja Ljubičić presented Annual Report for 2018 at the 26th session of The Gender Equality Committee of Croatian of Parliament. Ombudsperson presented activities in 2018, certain trends related to discrimination, institution’s field of work, complaint statistics, EU projects and conducted analysis and researches. Members of the initiative #spasime (#saveme) was also at the session.
The report for 2018 was unanimously accepted by members of the Committee. Also, members of committees, representatives of ministries and external committee members emphasized the importance of Ombudsperson’s work and need to strengthen the constitutional principle of gender equality in aim to provide life without discrimination.
Ombudsperson explained that constitutional principles shouldn’t be questioned by any group in society and that vested rights cannot be impaired or taken away. Ombudsperson’s mandate was dedicated to rule of law and improvement of work, transparency and efficiency of state administration. Ombudsperson is independent body and trying to solve problems proactively and cooperatively and, as supervisory body, is not on the contrary to the other state bodies because aim is the same: absence of discrimination and respect for human rights.
Ombudsperson also presented two EU project funded by REC (Rights, Equality and Citizenship) programme: Building more effective protection: transforming the system for combating violence against women and “Equal rights – Equal Pay – Equal Pensions” – Expanding the scope of implementation of gender equality actions and legal standards towards achieving gender equality and combating poverty in Croatia.
As members of Gender Equality Committee considered conclusions of the Report 2018 relevant, a session on the topic of combating violence against women and implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women will be convene.
